Dia de los Muertos

I made this for a friend who loves Day of the Dead as much as I do. I tried to depict the subtle feeling of spirits coming together for a celebration. Since the image of the skeleton was generally accepted as the symbol of death, I found it interesting as a young lad the way skeletons were being used to celebrate life, even if it was after death. I absolutely love the idea of people spending an evening with their deceased relatives, bringing offerings with them and decorating the tombs with flowers and candles, saying prayers while the children play together throughout the cemetery. If I could, I'd do it every weekend.

La Virgen

Here's my attempt at the portrait of La Virgen de Guadalupe. Normally I see this image in much brighter colors but I decided to give it a more rustic look to reflect the age of the original story.

Grail

This piece was an experiment. I was a little inspired by the costumes from the movie "The Cell" (I do kinda like that movie) and tried to recreate the texture from the meat suits inside the heart. I later decided to add the figure inside the chalice to portray a kind of baptism.

Cupid

Something I made for Valentine's Day a few years back. This was when I first began experimenting with my sketches in Photoshop, adding color and textures.

Greeting Card Covers

Here are some greeting card covers I did for a company called Leap Greetings. Since I couldn't really use my drawing skills for this project, I worked with mostly color and textures. The theme for this series was "Father to Son" as well as a few Christmas cards. Overall, I was happy with how they turned out.

X-Bone

This was a practice piece i did. There is no real significance to it but I still like it a lot.

Virgin & Child

I would have to say that this piece is one of my favorites. The portrayal of Baby Jesus as a skeleton was meant as a foreshadow to his predestined end. I was raised Catholic but I'm not devout. I do have a deep fascination with the story of the man called Jesus, even if elements of the story were borrowed from past deities. I made this for my Mother (and yes, she also loves this piece).
